Sun Multisport Events is bringing their triathlon back to the Upper Valley, and this year Lake Fairlee will be the host. The main races will be held on Sunday, June 30th, with pre-event activities for participants and families on Saturday the 29th. The event will be using Horizons Day Camp’s field for picnics, parking, and start and finish tents. The organizers are working with the Lake Fairlee Association and other local groups to ensure that everything runs smoothly and safely.
Participants will swim a diamond shaped course from Horizons’ docks beginning at 7:30 am. There are actually two competitions, one of “olympic” length, and the other a “half-ironman.” First participants will swim 0.9 or 1.2 miles respectively. Next they will bicycle either 28 or 56 miles, one or two laps on a long loop that heads west on 244 then south on 113 to Thetford Hill, then down Academy Road to 132, east to the Connectocut River, north up Route 5 to Ely, and finally up the big hill on 244 to the start/finish line. As if that weren’t enough they will then run 6.2 or 13.1 miles up and back on Middlebrook Road. The organizers anticipate that all swimmers will be out of the lake by 9:15am, and that the final runner will finish by 4:00pm.
Sun Multisport expects several hundred entrants, and will “employ” about 150 staffers and local volunteers. Details about the event can be found HERE and more general information HERE. We are glad that the promoters of this event clearly share our love of the lake and concern for its environment, and are happy so many new visitors get a chance to experience our beautiful lake.
